How to Use Pop-Ups To Convert Website Visitors Into Paying Clients

Popups can be annoying. We know that. But they help convert more visitors into paying clients if you know how to use them right.

Historically, popups have this bad vibe around them: they are considered harmful and unnecessary features that distract and annoy. However, let me reassure you that popups are extremely helpful if you want to funnel more visitors into your sales pipeline.

First, let’s get out of the way cases when using a popup is an absolute taboo: content websites, like magazines and newspapers. When the only goal of your website is providing a distraction-free reading experience, the popup is not a way to go, at all. Even if you’re asking for an innocent newsletter subscription.

It’s all different when you have an e-commerce project or a brochure site.

The right kind of popup creates more scenarios for your sales funnel.

For example, a user is visiting a product page and bounces. He doesn’t make a purchase, he leaves no trace. What if the price or the timing wasn’t right? We should try and offer him something that will keep him engaged. Something of high value, a freebie, or a discount. This lets us capture leads that would be lost without additional stimulation.

Here are some ways to play with popups.

💎 Exit popup

This popup shows up when a user tries to close the page. Use different popups for various pages, testing multiple scenarios. Offer a product variation, a freebie or a bonus.

💎 Popup on time-out

If a user stays on a page for a certain period of time, trigger a popup that gives them an alternative to what is presented on a page.

💎 Scroll + time-out

Trigger a popup if a user reached a certain point on a page given that a certain amount of time had passed.

IMPORTANT: Make sure a user doesn’t see all your popups every time they visit the site, over and over again. Set your popups to remember the visitors and trigger them only once every 60-90 days.

Clever usage of popups will help you diversify your marketing efforts and better segment your audience. Remember that each paid visitor has to be engaged one way or another, and stay in your business ecosystem. Elegant popups help do just that.
